CHRISTIAN HOME >> LOVE IN THE HOME

SDAH 655

Happy the home when God is there,
and love fills every breast;
when one their wish, and one their prayer,
and one their heavenly rest.

Introductions for Sabbath School Song Service (based on specific lesson quarterlies):

These words appear in Mrs. Mayo’s Selection of Hymns and Poetry for the Use of Infants and Juvenile Schools and Families in its third edition, 1846. The hymn is entitled “The Happy Home” and is signed “Mrs. W.” It was probably written by Henry Ware (1794-1843), the younger (Junior), born in Hingham, Massachusetts. He pastored the Second Unitarian Church, Boston, where Ralph Waldo Emerson was his assistant, and he wrote poetry merely as a means of relaxation and refreshment.

The tune ST. AGNES (see SDAH 241) was composed by John Bacchus Dykes (1823-1876). It is also used for SDAH 241, “Jesus, the Very Thought of Thee,” and SDAH 269, “Come, Holy Spirit.”

1
Happy the home when God is there,
and love fills every breast;
when one their wish, and one their prayer,
and one their heavenly rest.

2
Happy the home where Jesus’ name
is sweet to every ear;
where children early speak his fame,
and parents hold him dear.

3
Happy the home where prayer is heard,
and praise is wont to rise;
where parents love the sacred Word
and all its wisdom prize.

4
Lord, let us in our homes agree
this blessed peace to gain;
unite our hearts in love to thee,
and love to all will reign.
