SDAH 526: Because He Lives

CHRISTIAN LIFE >> FAITH & TRUST

SDAH 526

God sent His Son, they called Him Jesus,
He came to love, heal, and forgive;
He lived and died to buy my pardon,
An empty grave is there to prove my Savior lives.

Text
Text

1
God sent His Son, they called Him Jesus,
He came to love, heal, and forgive;
He lived and died to buy my pardon,
An empty grave is there to prove my Savior lives.

Refrain
Because He lives I can face tomorrow,
Because He lives all fear is gone;
Because I know He holds the future.
And life is worth the living just because He lives.

2
How sweet to hold a newborn baby,
And feel the pride, and joy He gives;
But greater still the calm assurance,
This child can face uncertain days because He lives.

Gloria Gaither, born March 4, 1942, into a modest Battle Creek, Michigan parsonage, could be characterized as wife mother, lyricist, author, speaker, recording artist, and performer. After graduating from Anderson College, Indiana, with majors in English, French, and sociology, she married noted songwriter Bill Gaither, and with him had coauthored some 500 songs. Since 1971 she has written four books on inspirational subject. She sings and travels with the Bill Gaither Trio, reaching as many as 500,000 people in a year. Of her ability as a creative communicator she says: “Much of my growing has come as a result of my children or some phase of family life. God is not complex. He speaks to us in ultimate simplicity. I cannot let what He has given me go to waste. I must act responsibly to do the most with what I have and trust the results to Him.”

Bill Gaither, coauthor of the words and composer of the music he titled RESURRECTION, was born March 28, 1936, at Alexander, Indiana. While a lad on the farm, he was keenly interested in gospel music. After listening to male quartets on the radio early in the morning, he would order the songbooks through the mail and learn the songs himself. With his future wife, Gloria, as a fellow student, he attended Anderson College, where he earned a B.A. degree. While teaching high school English, literature, and journalism at the college (Gloria taught there also), he formed the Gaither Music Company to published the songs he was writing and singing in churches of the Midwest. After their marriage in 1962, they began a full-time ministry of writing and publishing songs, recording, and concertizing with the Bill Gaither Trio. In a short time they became widely known for their ability to communicate “the resurrection principle in the daily life” through the idiom of Christian song. Phenomenal success has attended their efforts. Literally hundreds of Christian artists have made recordings of their songs “The King Is Coming,” “He Touched Me,” “Something Beautiful,” and “There’s Something AboutThat Name.”

In 1973 Gaither’s alma mater conferred on him an honorary D.Mus. For “Because He Lives,” both the Gospel Music Association and ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers) named Bill the “Gospel Songwriter of the Year” in 1974. A host of honors and awards have come to this talented couple, and they continue to write their gospel songs, record them in their own studio, and operate Alexandria House, a music publishing, printing, and distribution organization in their hometown of Alexandria, Indiana.
