SDAH 066: God Be With You

WORSHIP >> CLOSE OF WORSHIP

SDAH 66

God be with you till we meet again;
By His counsels guide, uphold you,
With His sheep securely fold you:
God be with you till we meet again.

Text
Text

1
God be with you till we meet again;
By His counsels guide, uphold you,
With His sheep securely fold you:
God be with you till we meet again.

2
God be with you till we meet again;
Neath His wings securely hide you,
Daily manna still provide you:
God be with you till we meet again.

3
God be with you till we meet again;
When life’s perils thick confound you,
Put His arms unfailing round you:
God be with you till we meet again.

4
God be with you till we meet again;
Keep love’s banner floating o’er you,
Smite death’s threatening wave before you:
God be with you till we meet again.

Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958; see Biographies) composed this music to fin these words, and it was included in the English Hymnal, 1906, for which he was musical editor. The tune has a most graceful architecture, simply expressing these words in the restraint of diatonic scale lines, with leaps of only an interval of the third to add interest. In many hymnbooks this has taken the place of Willian Tomer’s tune in the gospel song idiom, but the SDAH Committee felt that both tunes deserved a place in the hymnal.
