Hymn Spotlight: He Lives
Alfred H. Ackley’s resurrection hymn was born from a passionate defense of Christ’s living presence. In response to a question, “Why worship a dead Jew?”, Ackley proclaimed, “He lives!”—a truth he affirmed from Scripture and personal experience. This inspired both the lyrics and the melody. Set to a bright gospel tune, the hymn declares: “You ask me how I know He lives? He lives within my heart.” Sing it as a joyful testimony—Christ is alive!

Introductions for Sabbath School Song Service (based on specific lesson quarterlies):
Praise God. Jesus is lives in our hearts. At last we’re free to obey and follow Him. Indeed, The just shall live by faith in Him who died on the cross and rose again for our salvation. (Lesson 7, 2nd Quarter 2021 -Thursday, Promises, Promises, 5/13/2021)
George Sanville, who for many years was on thestaff of the Rodeheaver Company, in his Forty Gospel Hymn Stories, 1943, gives this account of writing of this gospel hymn. A young Jewish man had attended the evening evangelistic service of A.H. Ackley for five or six successive nights. One night he remained at the close of the service for further information about the divine presence of Jesus. “Why should I worship a dead Jew?” he asked. Ackley forthrightly answered, “He lives! I tell you, He is not dead, but lives here and now! Jesus Christ is alive today. I can prove it by my own experience, as well as the testimony of countless thousands.” In his rereading of the Resurrection stories of the Gospels, the words in in Matthew 28:6, “He is not her: for he is risen,” struck him with new meaning. Ackley said, “The thought of His ever-living presence brought the words and music promptly and easily.”
The Rodeheaver Company included this song in Triumphant Service Songs,1933, and it has since traveled widely over the world.
Alfred Henry Ackley was born January 21, 1887, at Spring Hill Pennsylvania. He learned music as a child from his father, and later studied in New York City and at Westminster Theological Seminary in Maryland. After ordination to the Presbyterian ministry, he served as a pastor in Pennsylvania and California. For a time, he was assistant to Hugh Thompson Kerr, editor of the Presbyterian Hymnal,1933. He and his older brother, B.D. Ackley (see SDAH 311), were very prolific in writing words and music of more than 1,000 hymns and gospel songs. They both worked for the Rodeheaver Company in compiling and publishing songbooks. Alfred received the honorary D. Sac. Mus. degree from John Brown University. He died at Whittier, California, July 3, 1960,

Text
1
I serve a risen Savior,
He’s in the world today;
I know that He is living,
Whatever men may say;
I see His hand of mercy,
I hear His voice of cheer
And just the time I need Him
He’s always near.
Refrain
He lives, He lives,
Christ Jesus lives today!
He walks with me
and talks with me
Along life’s narrow way.
He lives, He lives,
Salvation to impart!
You ask me how I know He lives?
He lives within my heart.
2
In all the world around me
I see His loving care,
And tho’ my heart grows weary
I never will despair;
I know that He is leading
Thru all the stormy blast,
The day of His appearing
Will come at last.
3
Rejoice, rejoice, O Christian,
Lift up your voice and sing,
Eternal hallelujahs
To Jesus Christ the King!
The hope of all who seek Him,
The help of all who find,
None other is so loving,
So good and kind.
