I need the prayers of those I love,
While trav’ling o’er life’s rugged way,

And live for Jesus every day.

Hymn Spotlight: I Need the Prayers

Written and composed by James D. Vaughan, a pioneering force in early Southern gospel music, this hymn reflects the heart of a man who dedicated his life to teaching, writing, and spreading Christian song. Born in Tennessee in 1864, Vaughan learned music through local singing schools and went on to establish his own publishing house and the influential Vaughan School of Music, which grew to be the largest of its kind in America. A prolific writer of more than 500 gospel songs—including “Will the Circle Be Unbroken?”—he understood the deep human longing for spiritual support, a theme captured tenderly in this hymn. Its message resonated so strongly that when the King’s Heralds sang it on the Voice of Prophecy broadcast for over four decades, it consistently brought in more listener responses than any other song. The hymn remains a gentle reminder that the prayers of God’s people are a sustaining gift, strengthening us as we walk together in faith.

Introductions for Sabbath School Song Service (based on specific lesson quarterlies):

James D. Vaughan, the writer of both words and music of this song, was born December 14, 1864, on the line between Lawrence and Giles counties, Tennessee. One of six sons, he was educated in public and private schools, and a normal singing school. He and three of his brothers learned the basic “do-re-mi’s” at a singing school a few miles from their home, and at age 18 James began teaching in such a school himself. After advanced musical study, he decided in 1902 to make the writing and publishing of music his life’s work, locating in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee. His first songbook was titled Gospel Chimes. In 1911 he established the Vaughan School of Music, with students coming from far and near to study with qualified teachers. By 1939 it was the largest such school in America. Active in local politics, Vaughan was for four years mayor of Lawrenceburg, and was owner and publisher of the local News. He wrote some 500 gospel songs, including “Will the Circle Be Unbroken?” and “I Dreamed I Searched Heaven for You.” After his death in 1941, his church was renamed “James D. Vaughan Memorial Nazarene Church.”

This song was used by the King’s Heralds on the Voice of Prophecy radiobroadcast over a period of 40 years. Each time, it generated more mail than any other song, showing a deep-felt universal need to be prayed for by loved ones.

I need the prayers of those I love,
While trav’ling o’er life’s rugged way,
That I may true and faithful be,
And live for Jesus every day.

Refrain
I want my friends to pray for me,
To bear my tempted soul above,
And intercede with God for me;
I need the prayers of those I love.

2
I need the prayers of those I love,
To help me in each trying hour,
To bear my tempted should to Him,
That He may keep me by His pow’r.

3
I want my friends to pray for me,
To hold me up on wings of faith,
That I may walk the narrow way,
Kept by our Father’s glorious grace.
