Hymn Spotlight: Fill My Cup, Lord
Inspired by the encounter between Jesus and the Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well (John 4), this hymn reflects the Savior’s promise of living water that forever satisfies the soul. It also draws from Psalm 23:5, where David declares, “My cup runneth over,” capturing the fullness and abundance found in Christ alone. Written and composed in 1959 by Richard Blanchard, a Methodist pastor born in Chungking, China, this song became his most well-known work among many others. Its heartfelt plea—“Fill my cup, Lord”—is both a prayer and a declaration of dependence on the One whose well never runs dry. As we sing, we are reminded that only Jesus can quench the deep thirst of the spirit and fill our lives with His overflowing grace.

Jesus’ words, “But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst,” becomes in the song “Draw from My well that never shall run dry.” Also, the well-known words from Psalm 23:5, “My cup runneth over,” are echoed in “Fill my cup, Lord.”
Richard Blanchard, who wrote both words and music, was born March 14, 1925, in Chungking, China. He received his education at Davidson College, Mercer University, and Candler School of Theology at Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia. Ordained to the Methodist ministry in 1948, he has served pastorates in Georgia and Florida. “Fill My Cup, Lord” has been used more than any of his other works, which include “The Gospel According to You,” “Treasures in Heaven,” “Revelation,” and “God Can.”
