Hymn Spotlight: No Night There
With lyrics by John R. Clements and music by Hart Pease Danks, this hymn draws from Revelation’s promise of the New Jerusalem—where God’s light banishes all darkness, and night will be no more. Its message points us toward a heaven filled with unending joy, peace, and the radiant presence of Christ. Each verse invites us to look beyond life’s trials to the eternal home where sorrow and shadows will never fall.

Introductions for Sabbath School Song Service (based on specific lesson quarterlies):
John R. Clements was born on November 28, 1868, in County Armagh, Ireland, and was taken to the United States at the age of 2. He began work as a grocery clerk at age 13 and continued in the grocery business. He started to write verse when he was 15 years old, and was converted in 1886 by the preaching of D. L. Moody. He became a deacon in the Presbyterian church in Binghampton, New York. He was much interested in the Christian Endeavour movement and served as president and secretary, respectively, of the New York State branch. A lifelong friend of Winfield Scott Weeden (see SDAH 309), he edited several songbooks with Ira D. Sankey.
The tune NO NIGHT THERE was composed by Hart Pease Danks (1834-1903; see SDAH 7), of New Haven, Connecticut.

Text
1
In the land of fadeless day
Lies “the city four-square;”
It shall never pass away,
And there is “no night there.”
Refrain
God shall “wipe away all tears;”
There’s no death, no pain, nor fears;
And they count not time by years,
For there is “no night there.”
2
All the gates of pearl are made,
In “the city four-square;”
All the streets with gold are laid,
And there is “no night there.”
3
And the gates shall never close
To “the city four-square;”
There life’s crystal river flows,
And there is “no night there.”
4
There they need no sunshine bright,
In “that city four-square;”
For the Lamb is all the light,
And there is “no night there.”
