For Worship Leaders

This stirring Advent hymn began as a Latin text by French poet and educator Charles Coffin, first published in 1736 in Hymni Sacri. It was written for morning prayers during the Advent season, reflecting the church’s hopeful longing for Christ’s coming.

The English translation was crafted in 1837 by John Chandler, a Church of England clergyman who preferred ancient hymns to modern ones. His work helped bring the rich Latin tradition of the early church into English worship.

Set to the tune FESTAL SONG by American composer William H. Walter, the music’s bold energy pairs beautifully with the call to prepare our hearts for Christ’s arrival.

As we sing, may our voices join the church through the ages in joyful anticipation of our Savior’s coming.

1
The advent of our God
With eager prayers we greet,
And singing haste upon His road
His coming reign to meet.

2
The everlasting Son
Was born to make us free;
And He a servant’s form put on
To gain our liberty.

3
As Judge, on clouds of light,
He soon will come again,
His scattered people to unite
With them in heaven to reign.

4
Praise to the incarnate Son
Who comes to set us free,
With Father, Spirit, ever one,
To all eternity.
