SDAH 68
On our way rejoicing
Gladly let us go;
Conquer’d hath our Leader,
Vanquish’d is the foe.
Text
1
On our way rejoicing
Gladly let us go;
Conquer’d hath our Leader,
Vanquish’d is the foe.
Christ without, our safety;
Christ within, our joy;
Who, if we be faithful,
Can our hope destroy?
Refrain
On our way rejoicing
As we forward move,
Hearken to our praises,
O blest God of love!
2
Unto God the Father
Joyful songs we sing,
Unto God the Savior
Thankful hearts we bring,
Unto God the Spirit
Bow we and adore,
On our way rejoicing
Now and evermore.

Notes
Get to know the hymns a little deeper with the SDA Hymnal Companion. Use our song leader’s notes to engage your congregation in singing with understanding. Even better, involve kids in learning this hymn with our homeschooling materials.
John Samuel Bewley Monsell (1811-1875; see SDAH 6) wrote this hymn for the first Sunday after Trinity in the Church Year, and published it in his Hymns of Love and Praise for the Church’s Year, 1863. He rewrote it as a processional hymn with added refrain and put it in his Parish Hymnal, 1873. Two stanzas have been omitted in SDAH. Monsell also authored SDAH 6, “O Worship the Lord,” and SDAH 613, “Fight the Good Fight.”
HERMAS gets its name from one of the friends of the apostle Paul, noted in Romans 16:14, Frances Ridley Havergal (1836-1879; see Biographies) composed this tune for one of her poems, “Jesus I Will Trust Thee” (some say she wrote it for her children’s hymn, “Golden Harps Are Sounding”), which was published in Harvegal’s Psalmody, 1871—a collection of her father’s tunes and charts that she edited. She is known mostly of her hymn text “Take My Life and Let it Be,” SDAH 330, and “Live Out Thy Life Within Me,” SDAH 316.
