Education

  • Educated at Marlborough College and Trinity College, Oxford (BA 1895)
  • A Fellow of All Souls’ College, Oxford (1895-1904)
  • Assistant Master at Marlborough College (1896-99), and at Eton College (1899-1908).

Highlights & Accomplishments

  • Was Headmaster of Shrewsbury School (1908-16) and of Eton College (1917-33)
  • Also Dean of Durham (1933-51), before retiring to St Weonard’s
  • Later ordained as deacon in the Church of England in 1899 and became a priest in 1901
  • Author of novels, poems, plays, detective stories, and books on Christianity such as Elementary Christianity (1927), Christian Outlines (1932), The Fool Hath Said (1933), and Can We Believe in God? (1936)
  • Published Shrewsbury Fables (1917), which were addresses given in Shrewsbury School chapel, Eton Fables (1921) and More Eton Fables (1927)
  • Also published A Schoolmaster’s Apology (1914) and A Dean’s Apology (1952), described as ‘a semi-religious autobiography’.
  • Had a reputation as a practised versifier, he had a fine ear for an effective line and a good verse, and many of these hymns are splendid examples of the grand style in hymnody, and was known to be one of the finest British hymn writer of the first half of the 20th century and was certainly the best in the grand style
