Highlights & Accomplishments

  • Pursued the cursus honorum (the ladder of advancement within the Roman public hierarchy)
  • Became governor of the province of Emilia-Liguria in 370, moving to Milan
  • Later chosen by the people as their bishop, was baptised and, one week later, was consecrated (1 Dec 373 or 7 Dec 374)
  • Represented the authority of the Roman Catholic church by exercising his pastoral responsibility and composing numerous treatises
  • Also became renowned as a major ecclesiastical figure for 23 years
  • Known as one of the four great Roman Catholic Church Fathers
  • Deemed as the true founder of the Latin Christian hymnody
  • His hymns have been constantly admired for their poetic and religious qualities, their clarity and their apparent simplicity of form and content
