Open Your Hymnals

WELCOME TO THE PODCAST

Open Your Hymnals explores hymns to help us sing with understanding, deepen our spiritual journey, and make worship more meaningful.

In this podcast, we will dive into the lives of hymn writers and composers, analyze how the lyrics intersect with God’s Word, how music becomes an effective carrier of the message, and how we can apply these things in personal devotions, home worship, church life, and community ministries.

Open your hymnal, open your Bible, and grab a notebook.

In each episode, we’ll slow down and…

  • Meet the people behind the hymns
Discover the lives, conversions, convictions, and trials that shaped the writers and composers we often only see as names on the page.
  • Compare hymn lines with Scripture
We’ll connect key phrases to Bible passages and themes, so the hymn becomes a mini Bible study—not just a sing-along.
  • Notice how music carries the message
How does a tune strengthen the meaning, shape emotion, or awaken hope? And what happens when a “common” or even secular melody gets redeemed with gospel truth?
  • Apply hymns beyond church
Practical ways to use hymns in personal devotion, home worship, church life, and community ministry—so we don’t just sing familiar words, we live them.

We’ll explore topics like…

hymn writer stories, early Adventist hymnody, the theology inside hymn texts, poetic devices in hymn writing, tune histories, why certain lines hit so deeply, how hymns teach doctrine, and how to use hymns intentionally in worship and daily life.

If you’ve ever sung a hymn and thought, Wait… what does that line really mean?—or if you’ve wanted worship to feel more thoughtful and grounded in Scripture—this podcast is for you.

HI, I’M IRENE BENNETT.

I share hymn-centered, Bible-grounded insights to help you sing with understanding, deepen your spiritual journey, and make worship more meaningful.

With a Piano Performance degree from Adventist University and an M.Mus. in Music Education (specializing in Organ), plus over 20 years of experience teaching in studio, collegiate, and church settings—and serving as a church musician—I’ve helped families, song leaders, and churches connect what they sing to what they believe.

Through Open Your Hymnals (and my resource hub Hymns for Worship), I invite you to open your hymnal, open your Bible, and rediscover the stories of faith behind the hymns we love.
