CHRISTIAN LIFE >> LovING SERVICE

SDAH 582

Working, O Christ, with Thee, working with Thee,
Unworthy, sinful, weak, though we may be;
Our all to Thee we give, for Thee alone we live,
And by Thy grace achieve, working with Thee.

These words by William Augustine Ogden (1841-1897; see alone; rather, he is in partnership with the Lord Jesus Christ. Using the – Biographies) emphasize the thought that the gospel worker is not apostle Paul’s expression “We then, as workers together with him” (2 Cor. 6:1), the poet uses the phrase “working with Thee” nine times in the four stanzas.

Sullivan (1842-1900; see SDAH 169) especially for the hymn “I’m But a The tune ST. EDMUND was composed in 1872 by Sir Arthur Seymour Stranger Here” (SDAH 445). It was to replace the tune suggested by the author of “Robin Adair,” a Scottish love song. The name St. Edmund commemorates an East Anglian king who was martyred by the invading Danes in A.D. 870 when he refused to renounce Christianity. The town of Bury St. Edmunds in Suffolk, England, is named after him also. Sullivan also composed SDAH 169, ST. KEVIN; SDAH 568, LEOMINSTER; and SDAH 612, ST. GERTRUDE.

1
Working, O Christ, with Thee, working with Thee,
Unworthy, sinful, weak, though we may be;
Our all to Thee we give, for Thee alone we live,
And by Thy grace achieve, working with Thee.

2
Along the city’s waste, working with Thee,
Our eager footsteps haste, like Thee to be;
The poor we gather in, the outcasts raise from sin,
And labor souls to win, working with Thee.

3
Savior, we weary not, working with Thee,
As hard as Thine our lot can never be;
Our joy and comfort this, “Thy grace sufficient is;”
This changes toil to bliss, working with Thee.

4
So let us labor on, working with Thee,
Till earth to Thee is won, from sin set free;
Till men, from shore to shore, receive Thee, and adore,
And join us evermore, working with Thee.
