Introductions for Sabbath School Song Service (based on specific lesson quarterlies):

These words are a partial paraphrase of Psalm 116:1, 2, which reads: ‘I love the Lord because he hath heard my voice and my supplications. Because he hath inclined his ear unto me.’

The musical setting is taken from a 1903 publication by George Whelpton, which contained other responses and a hymn for dismissal. Whelpton was born in Redbourn, Hertfordshire, England, on May 17, 1847, and emigrated to the United States when he was 4 years old. At the age of 16 he joined the Union Army in the Civil War. Then he studied music under Horatio Palmer (1834-1907) but earned his living as a pharmacist. He edited several music compilations and was a choir director in Buffalo, New York, from 1903 to 1925. He died in 1930.
