Introductions for Sabbath School Song Service (based on specific lesson quarterlies):
The anonymous words of this benediction are centered around the covenant between Jacob and Laban, made at the memorial stone, or watchtower, at Mizpah, recorded in Genesis 31:49: “The Lord watch between me and thee, when we are absent one from another.” In 1969, while Wayne Hooper (1920-; see Biographies) was minister of music at Vallejo Drive Seventh-day Adventist Church, Glendale, California, Lloyd Whitsett, a long-time bass in the choir, handed him the poem, saying it would make a good benediction. Wayne set it to music, originally in the key of F. It was sung at that church for several years at the close of the service.
