Introductions for Sabbath School Song Service (based on specific lesson quarterlies):
Sir John Stainer (1840-1901; see SDAH 414) composed this amen while he was organist at St. Paul’s Cathedral, London. It was sung after the consecration prayer in the Communion service, and first published in Stainer’s Choir Book for the Office of Holy Communion, 1873. The repetition of the word “amen” recalls Psalm 106:48: “Let all the people say, Amen.”
For comments on the word “amen,” see SDAH 663.
