Introductions for Sabbath School Song Service (based on specific lesson quarterlies):
This challenging hymn reminds us that stewardship involves, in addition to the giving of money, the dedication of our time, talents, and love in the service of the Lord. The hymn was a winner in the 1966 hymn-writing competition conducted by the Southern Baptists. Eva Brown Lloyd was born March 9, 1912, at Jameson, Missouri, and received her higher education at Northwest Missouri State University (B.A.), the University of Missouri at Kansas City (M.A.), and the University of Colorado. Her career includes teaching in elementary and secondary schools in Missouri, and 15 years teaching English literature at Northwest active in, the Maryville Baptist Church, and has served as director of the Missouri University (Maryville). With her husband she attends, and is Women’s Missionary Union. Five hymn texts have come from her pen, as well as other published poetry and prose.
Written at her home in Maryville in 1963, this hymn was first printed in Eight New Christian Service Hymns, 1966, by Broadman Press. She had the tune BEECHER (see SDAH 191) in mind, but the Southern Baptist Hymnal, 1975, uses BEACH SPRING as SDAH does. For comments on BEACH Love in Humble Service,” where it is in a unison setting. Here we have SPRING and the Sacred Harp tradition, see SDAH 363, “Lord, Whose Love in Humble Service” where it is in a unison setting. Here we have Melvin West’s (1930-; see Biographies) arrangement for four-part harmony.

Text
1
Come, all Christians, be committed
To the service of the lord;
Make your lives for him more fitted,
Tune your hearts with one accord.
Come into His courts with gladness,
Each his sacred vows renew,
Turn away from sin and sadness,
Be transformed with life anew.
2
Of your time and talents give ye,
They are gifts from God above;
To be used by Christians freely
To proclaim His wondrous love.
Come again to serve the Savior,
Tithes and off’rings with you bring.
In your work, with Him find favor,
And with joy His praises sing.
3
God’s command to love each other
Is required of every one;
Showing mercy to one another
Mirrors His redemptive plan.
In compassion He has given
Of His love that is divine;
On the cross sins were forgiven;
Joy and peace are fully thine.
4
Come in praise and adoration,
All who in Christ’s name believe;
Worship Him with consecration,
Grace and love you will receive.
For His grace give Him the glory,
For the Spirit and the Word,
And repeat the gospel story
Till mankind His name has heard.
