Introductions for Sabbath School Song Service (based on specific lesson quarterlies):

These words were written by Charlotte Elliot (1789-1871; SDAH These 313), and appear in her Morning and Evening Hymns for a Week, 1839. This particular one was set for Wednesday morning and is entitled “Watch and that pray ye enter not into temptation.”

VIGILATE (Watch Ye!) was composed in 1868 especially for these words, hence the name given to the tune by William Henry Monk (1823-1889; see SDAH 50). He was the musical editor of Hymns Ancient and Modern; the song appeared in the appendix to the first edition of this book. Monk also composed EVENTIDE, SDAH 50, and he arranged RATISBON, SDAH 233.

1
Christian, seek not yet repose,
Cast thy dreams of ease away;
Thou art in the midst of foes;
Watch and pray!

2
Gird thy heavenly armor on,
Wear it ever, night and day;
Ambushed lies the evil one;
Watch and pray!

3
Hear the victors who o’ercame;
Still they mark each warrior’s way;
All with one sweet voice exclaim:
“Watch and pray!”

4
Hear, above all, hear thy Lord,
Him thou lovest to obey;
Hide within thy heart His word;
“Watch and pray!”

5
Watch, as if on that alone
Hung the issue of the day;
Pray that help may be send down;
Watch and pray!
