Text
Text

1
When we walk with the Lord
in the light of his word,
what a glory he sheds on our way!
While we do his good will,
he abides with us still,
and with all who will trust and obey.

Refrain
Trust and obey, for there’s no other way
to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.

2
Not a shadow can rise,
not a cloud in the skies,
but his smile quickly drives it away;
not a doubt nor a fear,
not a sigh nor a tear,
can abide while we trust and obey.

3
Not a burden we bear,
not a sorrow we share,
but our toil he doth richly repay;
not a grief or a loss,
not a frown or a cross,
but is blest if we trust and obey.

4
But we never can prove
the delights of his love
until all on the altar we lay;
for the favor he shows,
and the joy he bestows,
are for them who will trust and obey.

5
Then in fellowship sweet
we will sit at his feet,
or we’ll walk by his side in the way;
what he says we will do,
where he sends we will go;
never fear, only trust and obey.

Notes

At one of Dwight L. Moody’s evangelistic meetings in Brockton, Massachusetts, a young man stood and gave his testimony with these words: I am going to trust, and I am going to obey.” Daniel Brink Towner (1850-1919), who was a soloist at the meeting, was impressed by these words. He jotted them down and sent them with the story of the incident to John H. Sammis. The latter wrote the words of the refrain first, then added the five stanzas and sent them to Towner. The words of the refrain summarize the thrust of the whole hymn, which first appeared in Hymns Old and New, 1887.

Sammis was born in Brooklyn, New York, on July 6, 1846. He became a successful businessman in Logansport, Indiana, as well as an active layman in the church. He gave up his business career to become the secretary of the YMCA, and later felt the urge to become a minister. He followed the call, completed a study course, and in 1880 was ordained to the Presbyterian ministry. He served in Iowa, Indiana, Michigan, and Missouri, and then in 1901 transferred to California. He taught in the Los Angeles Bible Institute until his death on June 12, 1919.

Towner composed the tune, a typical gospel song tune, employing just three chords, with the exception of a change of key in the refrain. Towner also contributed two other tunes to SDAH, all unnamed: No. 109 to the words “Marvelous Grace” and No. 508 to the words “Anywhere With Jesus,” the tune sometimes called SECURITY.

 For every resource we are entrusted, let us prove to be wise stewards, seeking the Master’s will in its use. Let us not yield to our desires to use His gifts selfishly, but let us trust His promises and obey His commands. (Lesson 12, 1st Quarter 2023 – Wednesday, “Deathbed Charity”, 3/8/23)

What a joy to trust and obey our God and to walk in the light of His Presence! When we do His good will, He abides with us, weak sinners though we be, and we are changed by each moment of communion with Him. (Lesson 4, 2nd Quarter 2023 -Monday, Fearing and Obeying God, 4/17/2023)
