Introductions for Sabbath School Song Service (based on specific lesson quarterlies):
Born September 5, 1851, in Millerton, New York, Howard Benjamin Grose was educated at the University of Chicago and the University of Rochester. In 1883 he was ordained to the Baptist ministry, serving churches in New York and Pennsylvania. He was president of the University of South Dakota, and later became a teacher of history at the University of Chicago, 1892-1896. Editorial work for several Baptist journals occupied the last part of his career before retirement.
It is thought that this challenging text for young people was written by Grose for a Christian Endeavor hymnal he was editing. He authored several devotional books. He died May 19, 1939.
The tune name BARNARD was given by the committee working on the Baptist Hymnal, 1956. It is probably one of the 100 tunes to secular texts composed by Barnard under the pseudonym “Claribel.”
Charlotte Alington Barnard was born December 23, 1830, at Louth, Lincolnshire, England, and studied theory and composition at the Royal Academy of Music. She was also a poet, publishing two books of poetry. Her best-known song was “Come Back to Erin.” She died at Dover, England, January 30, 1869.

Text
1
Give of your best to the master,
Give of the strength of your youth;
Throw your soul’s fresh, glowing ardor
Into the battle for truth.
Jesus has set the example –
Dauntless was He, young and brave;
Give Him your loyal devotion,
Give Him the best that you have.
Refrain
Give of your best to the master,
Give of the strength of your youth;
Clad in salvation’s full armor,
Join in the battle for truth.
2
Give of your best to the Master,
Give Him first place in your heart;
Give Him first place in your service,
Consecrate every part.
Give, and to you shall be given –
God His beloved Son gave;
Gratefully seeking to serve Him,
Give Him the best that you have.
3
Give of your best to the Master,
Naught else is worthy His love;
He gave Himself for your ransom,
Have up His glory above;
Laid down His life without murmur,
You from sin’s ruin to save;
Give Him your heart’s adoration,
Give Him the best that you have.
