SDAH 529: Under His Wings

CHRISTIAN LIFE >> FAITH & TRUST

SDAH 529

Under His wings I am safely abiding;
Though the night deepens and tempests are wild,
Still I can trust Him; I know He will keep me;
he has redeemed me, and I am His child.

Introductions for Sabbath School Song Service (based on specific lesson quarterlies):

In these words William Orcutt Cushing (1823-1902; see SDAH 208) has paraphrased some of the verses of Psalm 91: “Under his wings shalt thou trust” (verse 4); “shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty” (verse 1); “He is my refuge” (verse 2); “There shall no evil befall thee” (verse 10), and “Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him” (verse 14). The words were written in the 1890s; the song first appeared in Sankey’s Sacred Songs, No. 1, 1896.

The tune, formerly unnamed but in 1978 called HINGHAM after Cushing’s birthplace, was composed by Ira D. Sankey (1840-1908; see Biographies).

Cushing also contributed SDAH 208, “There’ll Be No Dark Valley”; SDAH 218, “When He Cometh”; and SDAH 525, “Hiding in Thee.”

1
Under His wings I am safely abiding;
Though the night deepens and tempests are wild,
Still I can trust Him; I know He will keep me;
he has redeemed me, and I am His child.

Refrain
Under His wings, under His wings,
Who from His love can sever?
Under His wings, my soul shall abide,
Safely abide forever.

2
Under His wings, what a refuge in sorrow!
How the heart yearningly turns to its rest!
Often when earth has no balm for my healing,
There I find comfort, and there I am blest.

3
Under His wings, O what precious enjoyment!
There will I hide till life’s trials are over;
Sheltered, protected, no evil can harm me;
Resting in Jesus I’m safe evermore.
