SDAH 528
Mighty Rock in a weary land,
Cooling shade on the burning sand,
Faithful guide for the pilgrim band—
A shelter in the time of storm.
Text
1
The Lord’s our Rock, in Him we hide,
A shelter in the time of storm;
Secure whatever ill betide,
A shelter in the time of storm.
Refrain
Mighty Rock in a weary land,
Cooling shade on the burning sand,
Faithful guide for the pilgrim band—
A shelter in the time of storm.
2
A shade by day, defense by night,
A shelter in the time of storm;
No fears alarm, no foes afright,
A shelter in the time of storm.
3
The raging storms may round us beat,
A shelter in the time of storm
We’ll never leave our safe retreat,
A shelter in the time of storm.
4
O Rock divine, O Refuge dear,
A Shelter in the time of storm;
Be Thou our helper ever near,
A Shelter in the time of storm.

Notes
Get to know the hymns a little deeper with the SDA Hymnal Companion. Use our song leader’s notes to engage your congregation in singing with understanding. Even better, involve kids in learning this hymn with our homeschooling materials.
This hymn was written by Vernon J. Charlesworth in 1880; the refrain was added by another hand. Charlesworth was born in Barking, Essex, England, on April 28, 1839. He was educated at Homerton College, London, and became co-pastor in 1864 at the Surry Chapel. In 1869 he was appointed headmaster of Spurgeon’s Orphanage in Stockwell, South London. He wrote 14 other hymns. He died at London on January 5, 1915.
The tune was composed in 1899 by Franklin Edson Belden (1858-1945), and was first published in Christ in Song, 1900.
The word of God is full of heavenly comfort and assurance that no matter what storm comes into our life, we will have shelter and peace. In this world, we will be facing tribulation but Jesus already overcomes the world. (Lesson 9, 1st Quarter 2021 -Wednesday, Hope in Advance, 2/24/2021)
