Hymn Spotlight: Life Is Great! So Sing About It
Written in 1970 by Brian Wren, this hymn is a joyful celebration of life in all its seasons—from hardship and grief to love and companionship, even into old age. Each stanza points us to the deeper meaning of love, culminating in the reminder that Christ Himself is the source of true, enduring love. Set to Peter Cutts’ tune LITHEROP, the hymn challenges us musically while encouraging us spiritually: no matter our circumstance, we can sing because Christ’s love surrounds and sustains us.

Introductions for Sabbath School Song Service (based on specific lesson quarterlies):
Brian Wren (1936-;) has given us here a unique hymn, titled “A Song of Love and Living,” for the celebration of the many experiences of life, some of which have never been sung about in hymns. The second stanza asks us to rejoice in the middle of “hardship, grief or disillusion,” pointing out that all is well if we have the love and comfort of someone. In the third, we celebrate the love that pervades our whole lifespan – from the tender moments of courtship through to old age! Stanza 4 is drawn from 1 Corinthians 13, and the final stanza sums it all up by singing about the element that surrounds everyone, the love of Christ, “that loving, living Man!” Wren says he wrote the hymn in 1970 especially for a youth service “to which no young people came!”
The first few notes of the tune LITHEROP by Peter Cutts (1937- ; see Biographies) are very similar to the Scottish folk song “Comin’ Thro’ the Rye.” But from there it goes its own creative way, giving us a melody that is rather challenging with its octave leaps, and introducing rests on a couple of down beats.

Text
1
Life is great! So sing about it,
As we can and as we should-
Shop and buses, towns and people,
Village, farmland, field and wood,
Life is great and life is given;
Life is lovely, free and good.
2
Life is great! What ever happens,
Snow or sunshine, joy or pain,
Hardship, grief or disillusion,
Suffering that I can’t explain
Life is great if someone loves me,
Holds my hand and calls my name.
3
Love is great! The love of lovers,
Whispered words and longing eyes;
Love that gazes at the cradle
Where a child of loving lies;
Love that lasts when youth has faded,
Bends with age, but never dies.
4
Love is giving and receiving
Boy and girl, or friend with friend;
Love is bearing and forgiving
All the hurts that hate can send;
Love’s the greatest way of living,
Hoping, trusting to the end.
5
God is great! in Christ He loved us,
As we should, but never can-
Love that suffered, hoped and trusted
When disciples turned and ran,
Love that broke through death forever.
Praise that loving, living Man!
