O there’ll be joy when the work is done,
Joy when the reapers gather home,
Bringing the sheaves at set of sun
To the New Jerusalem.

Hymn Spotlight: Joy By and By
Written by Franklin E. Belden, nephew of Ellen G. White, this lively gospel song draws from Psalm 126:5–6, reminding us that those who sow in tears will one day reap in joy. First published in Christ in Song (1905, 1908), it celebrates the certain hope of gladness when Christ returns. For weary workers in God’s cause, it’s a melody of encouragement—assuring us that the trials of today will give way to the harvest of joy in God’s kingdom “by and by.”

Introductions for Sabbath School Song Service (based on specific lesson quarterlies):
Both words and music were written by the nephew of Ellen G. White, Franklin Edson Belden (1858-1945; see Biographies). He based it partially on Psalm 126:5, 6. Copyrighted in 1899 by Belden, it was included in his very successful collection, Christ in Song, 1905 and 1908, which lists Belden as the publisher and Review and Herald as the printer. This is one of several that the committee brought back from this book, which contained 950 hymns and gospel songs.

Text
1
O there’ll be joy when the work is done,
Joy when the reapers gather home,
Bringing the sheaves at set of sun
To the New Jerusalem.
Refrain
Joy, joy, joy, there’ll be joy by and by,
Joy, joy, joy, where the joys never die;
Joy, joy, joy, for the day draweth nigh
When the workers gather home.
2
Sweet are the songs that we hope to sing,
Grateful the thanks our hearts shall bring,
Praising forever Christ our King
In the New Jerusalem.
3
Pure are the joys that await us there,
Many the golden mansions fair;
Jesus Himself doth them prepare,
In the New Jerusalem.
