Redeemed, how I love to proclaim it!

Hymn Spotlight: Redeemed!

This favorite gospel song by Fanny Crosby (1820–1915; see Biographies) first appeared with William J. Kirkpatrick’s tune in Songs of Redeeming Love, 1882. By placing the stanzas of SDAH 337 and 338 on facing pages, the hymnal allows worshippers to combine any of the five stanzas with either tune. The second tune, ADA, was composed in 1966 by Aubrey Lee (“Pete”) Butler (1933– ; see SDAH 193), a Baptist minister of music in Ada, Oklahoma—hence the tune’s name. Its powerful debut by the Singing Churchmen of Oklahoma at the Southern Baptist Convention captured the attention of hymn editors and revival leaders alike. Today, whether sung with the classic or contemporary tune, Redeemed! remains a triumphant proclamation of salvation through Christ.

Introductions for Sabbath School Song Service (based on specific lesson quarterlies):

As we are led by the Holy Spirit, we then acknowledge our sin and will have sense our need of a Savior. Through Christ’s grace and mercy we are justified and are able to be called as sons and daughters of God. (Lesson 6, 1st Quarter 2021 -Wednesday, Heaven’s Gate, 2/03/2021)

This favorite gospel song text by Fanny Crosby (1820-1915; see Biographies) first appeared with William J. Kirkpatrick’s tune (see SDAH 337) in Songs of Redeeming Love, 1882, edited by John R. Sweney, C. C. McCabe, T. C. O’Kane, and Kirkpatrick. By placing these two stings of the song on facing pages, it is possible to sing any combination of the five stanzas with either tune.

ADA was composed by Aubrey Lee (“Pete”) Butler (1933- ; see SDAH 193), a Baptist minister of music at ADA, Oklahoma (hence the tune name). It was introduced by the Singing Churchmen of Oklahoma at the Southern Baptist Convention held in 1966 at Detroit, Michigan. William J. Reynolds, musical editor of Baptist Hymnal, 1975, heard this performance and called the composer at once to make arrangements for its publication. As a mixed voice anthem it was published in The Church Musician, and used by Cliff Barrows, director of the huge choirs in the Billy Graham crusades. A delightfully singable hymn tune, it has been included in Crusade Hymns, Nashville, 1968; Hymns for the Living Church, Hope Publishing Company, 1982; Baptist Hymnal, Nashville, 1975.

1
Redeemed, how I love to proclaim it!
Redeemed by the blood of the Lamb;
Redeemed thro’ His infinite mercy,
His child, and forever, I am.

Refrain
Redeemed, redeemed,
Redeemed by the blood of the Lamb;
Redeemed, how I love to proclaim it!
His child and forever I am.

2
I think of my blessed Redeemer,
I think of Him all the day long;
I sing, for I cannot be silent;
His love is the theme of my song.

3
I know I shall see in His beauty
The King in whose law I delight,
Who lovingly guardeth my footsteps,
And giveth me songs in the night.
