Praise Him! praise Him! Jesus, our blessed Redeemer!
Sing, O Earth, His wonderful love proclaim!
Hail Him! hail Him! highest archangels in glory;
Strength and honor give to His holy Name!
Like a shepherd, Jesus will guard His children,
In His arms He carries them all day long:
Refrain
Praise Him! Praise Him! Tell of His excellent greatness.
Praise Him! Praise Him! Ever in joyful song!
2
Praise Him! Praise Him! Jesus, our blessed Redeemer!
For our sins He suffered, and bled, and died.
He our Rock, our hope of eternal salvation,
Hail Him! hail Him! Jesus the Crucified.
Sound His praises! Jesus who bore our sorrows,
Love unbounded, wonderful, deep and strong.
3
Praise Him! Praise Him! Jesus, our blessed Redeemer!
Heavenly portals loud with hosannas ring!
Jesus, Savior, reigneth forever and ever.
Crown Him! Crown Him! Prophet, and Priest, and King!
Christ is coming! over the world victorious,
Power and glory unto the Lord belong.

The year of the Lords favor is the coming of the Messiah. “Bring good news to the oppressed, to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and release to the prisoners” Isaiah 61:1 (Lesson 12, 1st Quarter 2021 -Wednesday, The Year of the Lord’s Favor, 3/17/2021)
This joyful outburst of praise was written in 1869 by Frances Jane Crosby (1820-1915; see Biographies), and echoes the exultant words of the psalmist: “While I live will I praise the Lord: I will sing praises unto my God while I have my being” Ps. 146:2). Some alterations have been made as there was originally no refrain, and the last two lines of stanza I were:
O ye saints that dwell on the mountains of Zion,
Praise Him! Praise Him, ever in joyful song.
The tune was composed by Chester G. Allen (1838-1877) especially for these words. It is sometimes named JOYFUL SONG, which reechoes the last words of the refrain. The hymn first appeared in Bright Jewels, 1869. Allen was a teacher of singing in New York and a conductor of singing at conventions. He also contributed to several compilations of Sunday School songs.
