Introductions for Sabbath School Song Service (based on specific lesson quarterlies):
Both the words and music of this traditional Hebrew benediction are anonymous. Wayne Hooper (1920- ; see Biographies) made a male voice arrangement for the King’s Heralds Quartet of the Voice Prophecy in 1974. At the same time he wrote the text as an extension of the meaning of this eloquent word. We are told that it actually has multiple meanings-hello, farewell, and peace-with special overtones of loving concern and a sincere caring for one another. When sung at the beginning of a meeting, the first phrase of the third stanza can be changed to “As we meet again.
The two-measure accompaniment by Melvin West (1930-; see Biographies) can be repeated for the duration of the canon.
