CHRISTIAN HOME >> LOVE IN THE HOME

SDAH 653

Lead them, my God, to Thee, Lead them to Thee,
These children dear of mine, Thou gavest me;
O, by Thy love divine, Lead them, my God, to Thee;
Lead them, my God, to Thee, Lead them to Thee.

Introductions for Sabbath School Song Service (based on specific lesson quarterlies):

This poem by an unknown author first appeared in The Silver Spray: a New and Choice Collection of popular Sabbath School Music compiled by William H. Doane (see Biographies) in 1868. It was in three more hymnals in 1869, and came into SDA hymnals with Belden’s tune in the 1886 book (see chapter on Adventist hymnody).

ROBINSON commemorates an American missionary family who served in South Africa. It was composed by Franklin Edson Belden (1858-1945; see Biographies). The words appeared in Hymns and Tunes, 1886, with another tune, but in Christ in Song, 1908, Belden used this tune, which he had copyrighted in 1886, naming it DOANE (no doubt after the prolific gospel song composer). The name ROBINSON was used for the tune by the editors of Church Hymnal, 1941.

1
Lead them, my God, to Thee, Lead them to Thee,
These children dear of mine, Thou gavest me;
O, by Thy love divine, Lead them, my God, to Thee;
Lead them, my God, to Thee, Lead them to Thee.

2
When earth looks bright and fair, Festive and gay,
Let no delusive snare Lure them astray;
But from temptation’s power, Lead them, my God, to Thee,
Lead them, my God, to Thee, Lead them to Thee.

3
E’en for such little ones, Christ came a child,
And in this world of sin Lived undefiled.
O, for His sake, I pray, Lead them, my God, to Thee,
Lead them, my God, to Thee, Lead them to Thee.

4
Yea, though my faith be dim, I would believe
That Thou this precious gift Wilt now receive;
O take their young hearts now, Lead them my God to Thee,
Lead them, my God, to Thee, Lead them to Thee.
