SDAH 503: A Quiet Place

CHRISTIAN LIFE >> MEDITATION AND PRAYER

SDAH 503

There is a quiet place,
Far from the rapid pace where God can soothe my troubled mind.
Sheltered by tree and flow’r,
There in my quiet hour with Him my cares are left behind.

Hymn Spotlight: A Quiet Place

Written in 1967 by Ralph Carmichael, a leading figure in American gospel music and a gifted composer, arranger, and orchestrator, this reflective song grew out of his own experience in a moment of intense pressure. Remembering Jesus’ invitation in Mark 6:31, “Come… and rest a while,” Carmichael stepped away to a quiet place to seek spiritual refreshment—and this hymn was the result. Its gentle lines echo the Savior’s call to pause amid busyness and be renewed by His presence. Carmichael’s influence in sacred music is far-reaching, with other familiar contributions in our hymnal such as “The Savior Is Waiting” (No. 289) and “As We Come to You in Prayer” (No. 671), all pointing the believer toward rest, surrender, and communion with God.

Introductions for Sabbath School Song Service (based on specific lesson quarterlies):

Ralph Carmichael (1927- ; see Biographies) has been and is a strong force in gospel music in America. An orchestrator, choir director, and radio and television performer, he runs composer, arranger, his own publishing and recording business. Written in 1967, this meditation song recalls Jesus’ words to His disciples in Mark 6:31, “And He said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat.”

Carmichael wrote this song for himself. It was at a time of tremendous pressure, with much to be done in a short time to meet a deadline. So he went to “a quiet place,” to be “refreshed from above.” Two other Carmichael in SDAH are No. 289, “The Savior Is Waiting,” and No. 671,
“As We Come to You in Prayer.”

There is a quiet place,
Far from the rapid pace where God can soothe my troubled mind.
Sheltered by tree and flow’r,
There in my quiet hour with Him my cares are left behind.
Whether a garden small,
Or on a mountain tall,
New strength and courage there I find;
Then from this quiet place
I go prepared to face a new day
With love for all mankind.
