Hymn Spotlight: The Son of God Proclaim
Written by Basil Ernest Bridge, a Congregational minister in England, this hymn first appeared in Congregational Praise(1964) and calls believers to boldly share Christ with the world. Set to the tune DAY OF PRAISE by Charles Steggall—an accomplished 19th-century English organist and educator—it carries a dignified yet joyful tone. As we sing, we are reminded of our Adventist mission to proclaim the everlasting gospel, lifting up Jesus as Savior and Lord until every nation hears His name.

Introductions for Sabbath School Song Service (based on specific lesson quarterlies):
Basil Ernest Bridge was borne in Cambridge, Orida, England, and went to school at Cheshunt College, Cambridge. Ordained a Congregational minister in 1951, he served churches at Knowle, Warwickshire, and a supplement to Leicester, England. This hymn is taken from Congregational Praise, which was compiled in 1964 for use at the Congregational Church of Roborough.
DAY OF PRAISE was first published in the Supplemental Hymn and Tune Book, 1869. The name comes from its early association with the John Ellerton hymn “Our Day of Praise Is Done.”
Charles Steggall was born June 3, 1826, in London; he entered the Royal Academy of Music, where he studied under Sterndale Bennett. While still a student, he played the organ at Christ Church, Maida Avenue. In 1851 he earned the D. Mus. at Cambridge and was the first professor of organ at the Royal Academy of Music, a post he held for 50 years! One of the founders of the Royal College of Organists, he was also the first secretary of the London Bach Society. Other positions he held were organist at Christ’s Church, Lancaster Gate, and at Lincoln’s Inn Chapel; and examiner in music at Cambridge from 1882. His compositions included anthems, church music, and hymn tunes. He edited Hymns for the Church of England, 1868, and was in charge of the music for the 1904 edition of Hymns Ancient and Modern. He died at Lambeth, London, on June 7, 1905.

Text
1
The Son of God proclaim,
The Lord of time and space;
The God who bade the light break forth
Now shines in Jesus’ face.
2
Behold His out stretched hands,
Though all was in His power
He took the towel and basin then,
And serves us in this hour.
3
He, God’s creative word,
The church’s Lord and head,
Here bids us gather as His friends,
And share His wine and bread.
4
The Lord of life and death
With wondering praise we sing;
We break the bread at His command,
And name Him God and King.
5
We take this cup in hope:
For He, who gladly bore
The shameful cross, is ris’n again,
And reigns forevermore.
