Hymn Spotlight: What a Wonderful Savior

Elisha Hoffman, a prolific hymn writer known for his simple yet powerful gospel songs, penned both the lyrics and music of this hymn in 1891. Like his other well-loved hymns—“I Must Tell Jesus” and “Leaning on the Everlasting Arms”—this piece overflows with joyful assurance in Christ’s redemptive work. With each stanza declaring a new reason to rejoice in salvation, the refrain becomes a triumphant chorus of praise. This hymn reminds us that Jesus doesn’t just forgive—He transforms, sustains, and sanctifies. What a truly wonderful Savior we serve!

Introductions for Sabbath School Song Service (based on specific lesson quarterlies):

We are elected in Christ to eternal life if we accept Him as our personal Savior (Rom. 8:29, Eph. 1:3–8). He wishes for everyone to be saved (1 Tim. 2:3, 4). Hoffman couldn’t be more correct about our sure election when she wrote, We are redeemed! The price is paid! What a wonderful Saviour! (Hymns Suggestions for “God’s Call”, Oct 12-18, 2019, Lesson 3)

The heavenly court scene of Daniel 7:9–14 depicts the central event of the chapter. The books; the Ancient of Days on the throne; and the Son of man, surrounded by heavenly clouds (Dan. 7:13) as He comes into the presence of the Ancient of Days, portray a scene of judgment in heaven. For the saints, who have been persecuted by the little horn, the judgment means vindicationsalvation, and restoration. We should bear in mind that the judgment of the living will take place only when the time of probation closes and the seven last plagues begin to be poured on Babylon (Revelation 15, Revelation 16). But most important, we must not fear the judgment because the “Son of Man” is our representative in the heavenly tribunal. Thus, rather than condemnation, the heavenly judgment will bring us vindication and deliverance. (Lesson 8, 1st Quarter 2020 – Tuesday, The Court Was Seated, 2/17/2020)

Our lesson today talks about Jesus as our Savior. The One who gives us overcoming power and triumph in each trying hour. What a wonderful Savior is Jesus, our Lord. (Lesson 5, 1st Quarter 2021 -Thursday, You Comforted Me, 1/28/2021)

The lyrics of this hymn reminds us that we are already redeemed by Jesus and the price was paid by His blood. That precious sacrifice was not only for our salvation but it also gives us an overcoming power and triumph in each and every hour. (Lesson 6, 1st Quarter 2021 -Wednesday, Heaven’s Gate, 2/03/2021)

The life of Jesus is a perfect example for us. While on earth, He dedicated his time to be with people and share the wondrous love of Jesus. May we too live a life with a burning desire to minister to people. (Lesson 11, 1st Quarter 2021 -Wednesday, Fast Fight, 3/10/2021)

Everything that God asks us to do can only be done on the basis of faith in Christ and on the sacrifice He made on the cross to set us free from sin and enable us to live according to His will. (Lesson 7, 2nd Quarter 2021 -Thursday, Promises, Promises, 5/13/2021)

Both text and tune for this hymn were written by Elisha Hoffman (1839-1929; see Biographies) and the hymn was first published by Bigelow and Main in Gospel Hymns No. 6, 1891.

Hoffman also wrote the words for SDAH 469, “Leaning on the Everlasting Arms,” and words and music for SDAH 485, “I Must Tell Jesus.”
