Prince of Peace, control my will,

Hymn Spotlight: Prince of Peace, Control My Will

A prayer for surrender, this hymn pleads for Christ to reign in the heart. Though attributed to Frances Havergal, its words are often confused with other hymns of consecration. The theme remains: the Prince of Peace must rule within if we are to live in harmony with heaven. Echoing Philippians 4:7, this hymn asks for the peace of God to guard our hearts through Christ Jesus. In daily life, may we invite the Prince of Peace to shape our will to match His own.

Introductions for Sabbath School Song Service (based on specific lesson quarterlies):

Mary Ann Serrett Barber (1801-1864), of Huguenot ancestry, was an enthusiastic supporter of the Anglican Church. She contributed verse to the church magazine and also edited a children\’s magazine. In 1838 she sent a poem of four stanzas of eight lines each, entitled “He Is Our Peace,” of which the SDAH hymn is a modified selection. The full 32 lines were printed in the Church of England Magazine for March 3, 1858. Note that the word peace is mentioned five times in the three stanzas.

TRYGGARE KAN INGEN VARA (see SDAH 101) is an old Swedish folk melody that could have had German origins. It is also said to be an old English folk song that was carried over to Sweden during the Pietistic revival of the latter half of the nineteenth century, when many English gospel songs made the same journey. The arrangement for SDAH was made by Melvin West (1930- ; see Biographies).

Stanza:

Text

1
Prince of Peace, control my will,
Bid this struggling heart be still;
Bid my fears and doubtings cease,
Hush my spirit into peace.

2
Thou hast bought me with Thy blood,
Opened wide the gate to God;
Peace, I ask, but peace must be,
Lord, in being one with Thee.

3
May Thy will, not mine, be done,
May Thy will and mine be one;
Chase these doubtings from my heart,
Now Thy perfect peace impart.
